South Kerry Development Partnership CLG (SKDP) welcomes the decision of An Bord Pleanála to grant planning permission for the development of the South Kerry Greenway.
Speaking following the announcement of the decision earlier today, SKDP Chairperson Cllr. Michael Cahill, on behalf of the Board of SKDP, said that this major decision can now act as a catalyst for the regeneration of the entire South Kerry area. “We are calling on all parties involved to unite now and work together to ensure this vital project can be delivered as soon as possible to maximise the potential benefits for all in the region” he said.
“The Board of South Kerry Development Partnership believe that the proposed South Kerry Greenway has the potential to transform rural South Kerry both economically and socially, provide a wonderful recreational experience for visitors and locals and contribute to the health of the citizens of South Kerry and beyond” he added.
SKDP CEO Mr. Spillane noted the success of similar greenway initiatives in counties such as Mayo and Waterford and their transformative effect on many small towns along and adjacent to those Greenways.
“SKDP, in commissioning the initial feasibility study into the South Kerry Greenway project in 2011 and through the work we have done on the project with Kerry County Council in the intervening years, recognised the importance of the project in potentially addressing the long term socio-economic decline of the Iveragh peninsula, which has been well documented” Noel said. “South Kerry Development Partnership are of the view that government investment in the South Kerry Greenway will yield positive results in tackling these issues for rural communities on the Iveragh peninsula” he concluded.
