Business Spotlight

SKDP’s Enterprise Officers have successfully helped many people onto the BTWEA self-employment scheme.  Here are some we are shining a spotlight on.  If you think you have a business idea, read up on the BTWEA scheme

The Mill Café & The Fishery Restaurant

The Mill Café – a dynamic business was established in 2017 by Katarzyna (Kasia) Kalinowska.  The café is tucked away on Mill Road in the beautiful town of Killorglin.  Kasia’s aim is to combine the elements of a café, a bistro and a bakery, and put these together in a stylish luxe setting. Her motto is simple: an uncomplicated menu that is where possible cooked and baked in house.Kasia, propreitor of the Mill café

Her objective was to grow an empire in Killorglin whose goal is to always aim at exceeding customer expectations. Kasia takes great pride in having total commitment to customer satisfaction by providing a personal and professional service through the experience and commitment of her staff, her establishments and her menus.

Her objective was realised when in 2019 the opportunity to take over The Fishery Restaurant arose and Kasia together with her husband Jacek said Yes!

The idea was a small boutique Bistro with great food. The Fishery is open daily and offers an excellent location with ample parking and breath-taking views of the Laune River and Killorglin town. The bistro-style dining experience is set amid a delightfully relaxing ambience and their table staff take great pride in making guests feel most welcome throughout their visit.

Kasia and Jacek are both passionate and highly professional individuals with strong creative drives, entrepreneurial qualities and business acumen and it is to this end that this new venture has emerged.

More information on these Mid-Kerry eateries can be found on social media @themillkillorglin and @launeriver or by contacting Kasia on [email protected].

This exciting new enterprise emerged in 2017 with the help of the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance (BTWEA), facilitated by South Kerry Development Partnership. This scheme encourages people getting certain social welfare payments to take up self employment opportunities by allowing them to retain a proportion of their social welfare payment, plus secondary benefits.

Kim Elliot - Rocket Deliveries

Kim has been living in Co. Kerry now for over 20 years and has always enjoyed the experience and taste of buying locally grown organic salad and vegetables and has always been passionate about supporting local producers and growers.

The idea of the business grew from family and friends asking her to add their own orders to her list of items that she was buying from local growers in Cahersiveen each week. Kim soon found that the numbers of orders were growing and she was delivering around the area each Friday and so the small business of Rocket Deliveries was established. Kim ran a market stall at a local country market and found that customers wanted vegetable boxes throughout the year and the business began to grow.

In September 2019 Kim teamed up with Kenneth Keavey owner and grower of Green Earth Organics Farm, Galway – a 40 acre certified organic farm as the number of boxes were exceeding the volume of produce that Kim could find locally.  Making this leap with the business offers customers a choice of boxes and also an opportunity to customise their own box plus add any of the 400 plus items from the organic grocery section.  Kim believes that organic food should be accessible to all and has now established a weekly delivery route around the Ring of Kerry and Tralee.

Using her vivid imagination, her works ranging from sceneries to wedding invites, are painted with a fresh and modern twist. She mixes reality with fantasy to create magical worlds. Rochelle hopes that her work, being so full of character and fun, will make others feel happy and will inspire others to appreciate the beauty and happiness around them.

The pandemic didn’t mean that Rochelle stopped creating in fact it meant her creative juices were flowing even more and so Rochelle has expanded her offering to include handmade and hand painted earrings and also enabled her to commence the creation of her enthralling new artistic collection “Out of Service”
